Valkaniki Square Neapoli, Thessaloniki

General Plan

Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, FYROM, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Hellas. The proposal for the ‘Balkan Piazza’ is aiming twofold: Rehabilitation of a vital everyday open space for a densely built municipality and creation of a multi-national celebration space for the Balkans. Both aims are translated by one word: unity. Or else, rejection of fragmentation -a usual practice in urban interventions. Through a double curved twist, the composition is comprised of a curvilinear void, as a stone glade, a human container, an urban atrium for events and recreation, in the midst of a unified, solid, unnegotiable green enclave that reveals the ‘Balkan Piazza’ as a bright Dodecahedron jewel: Coiling, Amplitude, Insertion, Synergy, Location, Interconnection, Hierarchy, Cyclicality, Elevation, Contrast, Hovering, Flexibility, its 12 Hedra. The proposal is not a piazza plus a theatre plus a sports court, it is one and only space, a long open ‘stadion’. Its 185 greek meters, open to multinational, periodical celebration, open to everyday urban currents, open to the verdurous surrounding park, attain unity with their lively, demanding, unpredictable occupation through the only manner that Hellenic meter has till now successfully applied: levels in the sun.
