2ND PRIZE_Architectural Competition
ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION FOR THE REGENERATION OF THE PUBLIC SPACE AND THE WIDER AREA OF THE NEW ALEXANDRAS METRO STATION
Located on Alexandras Avenue, in close proximity to Pedion Areos, a distinctly linear space welcomes the new metro station. In direct connection with a major metropolitan artery, it simultaneously serves as one of the few green areas along the avenue. Its role is to harmonize the bustling traffic of both vehicles and pedestrians, providing a space for both transit and leisure. The proportions of the area, its adjacency to a significant public park, its positioning between the Neapoli and Gizi neighborhoods, and its perception by moving vehicles and pedestrians collectively imbue it with a particularly pivotal and dynamic character.
The design, primarily utilizing geometric forms, aims to seamlessly integrate with the rapid adjacent movement, signify the presence of the station, and offer a sitting area through dense, linear plantings that serve as a backdrop to emphasize the overall composition. The introduction of the new metro station, the management of existing and new flows, and the simultaneous creation of sitting areas result in a linear, flowing composition. This composition functions both as a landmark and as a sculptural and functional filter between two seemingly incompatible urban phenomena: a residential area and metropolitan traffic.
The field is defined by a series of flows parallel to the main traffic along Alexandras Avenue. In section, the design follows the pre-existing linear sense of space. Along the avenue's axis, the proposal suggests the emergence of a distinctly linear, elevated structure. The variable width of this structure aims for an elegant anchoring at the ends of the field. The central opening of the elevation serves as a roof for the stairs connecting to the underground station, while the tapering at the ends achieves a subtle grounding. This approach seeks to establish sculptural coherence with the strong linearity of the artery.
The space in front of the structure is intentionally left open, allowing for the movement of pedestrians. A series of low bollard-style pillars protect these movements. The area behind the elevated structure, facing the residential side, features a similarly linear, tall planting serving as a visual filter, sound barrier, and a surface for the reflective projection of the new landmark. The trees grow parallel to the longer side of the field, leaving a perimeter zone for pedestrian movement. The intense linearity characterizing the proposal is interrupted by a diagonal movement, centrally carved to capture movements to and from the station from the residential area. This defines two extensive surfaces of planted terraces on either side, mitigating the impact of existing ventilations.
This new landmark on Alexandras Avenue is not only visible from a distance but also permeable. The elevation above the staircase of the underground station takes the form of a broad canopy, simultaneously acting as a passage, elevating the selective movement of pedestrians to a second level.
