Eleutherias Square Nicosia, Cyprus

International Competition | Entry

City Level Plan

The proposal for the new square is a simple, acute, floating body inserted into the trench, thus creating a unique tense point -out of which every other intervention emerges. The proposed scheme is contrapuntal to the extrovert curvilinear development of the medieval wall. The main sunken corpus of the square essentially reveals the bastion, to which it refers. The  square is an absolute shape that allows the trench to develop freely beneath it. The triangular shape creates a public space at a distance from the city's boundaries, in particular from the side of the wall -with sufficient circulation connections. The tall, evergreen trees, which dominate the trench result in the only apparent disruption of the shape, which is torn in two asymmetric areas: the main preserving the reference to the Venetian wall, and the smallest one descending smoothly to the ground -forming an organic continuity with the emerging new, broad, green zone.
