The site lies in between: In between the walled city and the evolving outer urban area. It could essentially become a link of the two. As a public, open, intermediate space with a distinct but also discreet character capable of accentuating the existing urban qualities: enclosure and openness. The density of the inner city, sharply defined by the curvilinear walls is in contrast with the looser growth of the exterior one. The site lies at the northern limit of the walled city. Its hollow exterior curve is dominant and the requested public hub should embrace and reveal it. That massive, continuous curve is what generates the new, also essentially curvilinear scheme that is inserted in between. The traffic link between Zagrebacka and Hvarska Streets gets shifted diagonally in order to give space to the new spatial development and allow the visual and functional embrace of the walls at the full length of their curve. The spaces –open and closed- that are included in the new urban scheme are all public: an extended park, a piazza, the terminal, public facilities and offices. The residential and more private part of the project gets naturally located at the eastern area of the site, above the shifted transversal road. Accordingly, the existing residential fabric is naturally continued and interwoven with the proposed housing complex. The shifted road lies in between the new residences and the public corpus of the proposal: an urban green pebble.
