New Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the University of Cyprus. New Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the University of Cyprus: A contemporary education building, in a rapidly developing city, and in a place with a Mediterranean climate, must respond to three key issues, in a creative way: 1__ How a University School with a strong artistic character can dynamically express its spatial footprint in the urban space that hosts it and feeds it with its activity. 2__ How can this spatial footprint remain porous and receptive to public space and 3__ How the internal functional development of the school can be expressed with simplicity and functional flexibility, while remaining in contact with the city. The main proposal emerges through a square, the ultimate expression of public space: a covered, double-height outdoor space - a place open to the University as well as Limassol. The creation of an open space in contact with the urban fabric is proposed under the floating protection of the main level of the educational life of the new Department of Graphic Arts and Multimedia. The symbolically charged volume projects over the new square, while its sculptural, central elevation is an idiosyncratic, structurally bold proposition - able to allow educational life to occupy it and public traffic to flow unimpeded towards the square and towards the interior of the school. The new Department is developed on 5 main above-ground levels and two underground levels, with its life starting from the ground floor level - which houses the entrance-reception, the exhibition area, and the large manufacturing workshops. The next level welcomes, among others, a Collaborative Space as well as the History-Theory room -open to the public and in visual contact with the square. The teaching laboratories occupy the next two rooms - with the latter housing research, through successive scaling of the roofs and a gradual reduction of the volume of the building towards the main, public access.
