Medical School Nicosia, Cyprus

International Architectural Competition | Entry

University of Cyprus Medical School_European Competition. The new medical school will be by default part of a wider university entity/ συνόλου. It is directly surrounded by the Center for Social Activities, the Biological School and the Polytechnic School. Campus buildings have arisen through the execution of individual architectural competitions, in particular fractured fields. The Medical School is therefore called upon to occupy – last in relation to its immediate environment – a particular field, with predetermined building facilities in its surrounding. These are characterized as a whole by a morphological and functional pluralism. The crucial question thus arises as follows: - How could the proposal for the new Medical School - a necessary embolization within an exuberant building environment - to be synthesized in a manner that ambiguates the volumetric pluralism; - In a way that imposes with simplicity the new building - both functionally and symbolically? The same sculptural heterogenesity of the surrounding space indicates a proposal that the inherent simplicity of the shapes should ensure the validity of a smooth integration and a strong presence of the new School. 4 simple and geometrically clear gestures, which in addition correspond to the 4 levels of the proposed entity, attempt to achieve this:

1-The field trapezium is lifted up creating a terrestrial podium - base of the School

2-From the horizontal podium is sunstracted a wide rectangle, forming its internal courtyard.

3-The upper surface of the base is an open public garden-extension of the belvedere.

4-Garden and yard are protected from the detached floor - a floating circular disc. The existing shape of the field + a circle: The School attempts a primordial simplicity.
