Through the creation of a new shell, the borderland of Florina aspires to welcome the School of Fine Arts. This reception must be functionally adequate and symbolically charged. Given the winter snowfalls and one of the coldest climates in the Greek territory, the building shells in the city of Florina must be robust, with the existence of a roof and the development of the interior space being of great importance. Of paramount importance for the proper functioning of a School of Fine Arts is the uniform and abundant distribution of natural light in the studios. This uniform distribution is usually optimally achieved from the north. The given field, at a distance from the city and in contact with the Pedagogical Academy, has a main characteristic: its diagonal is located exactly on the east-west axis. Therefore, given on the one hand the desired lighting of the studios achieved by glass surfaces facing north and on the other hand the introduction of the studios in a simple, structurally robust shell that is itself the roof, the proposal for the new School of Fine Arts is resolved by a simple L shape section: a roof - building. Evolving along the diagonal of the court, the new shell is a longitudinal repetition of this simple section, with one of its sides slightly sloping and facing north while its other side is being its roof. The main objective of the design is to create a structurally coherent, functionally flexible, sustainable and symbolically strong shell that relates to the existing facilities of the Pedagogical Academy, in a valid way. Its diagonal positioning creates two main open spaces, towards the north and south respectively. The south-facing space, a courtyard for the access to the new school, a recreational space and a connection to the central Amphitheatre and to the library, is complementary to the north-facing space, which accommodates all the outdoor exhibition activities for the studios. The latter, slightly immersed, atypically triangular in shape, is connected to the surrounding streets by curved slopes, while a circular, also open theatre - forming the School's sheltered, outdoor studio - is anchored at its north-west corner. The first space, framed by planting and sunlight, is in contact with an elongated public gallery as it simultaneously welcomes the transverse covered connection to the existing buildings -forming its daily garden. The new school has a double face: From the south, a sloping roof, a soft section almost born from the ground, while from the north, robust, linear beams, between which light passes through to a creatively feverish interior.
