Commendation for Best Study_DOMa.archi 2023_Athens Archaeological Museum at Plato’s Academy
Archaeological Museum of the City of Athens at Plato's Academy: the timeless metropolitan role of Athens from antiquity to the present day, not just through a museum, but a new international pole of research and culture. A symbolically charged place is called upon to welcome the wealth of findings of the Athenian City in a relationship that must not allow the dominance of one over the other. This is the main challenge: the erasmian Topos of the Platon Academy Park coexists with the Museum, the Topos welcomes it, embraces it, while the Museum allows the Topos to absorb it, to integrate it. Such a thing would mean mainly the following: the creation of a Museum that is n o t a landmark. Of a Museum that immerses itself in the Place, is fragmented by it, allows its individual units to adapt to its environment, of a Museum that does not dominate, does not stand unaffected, as a Fortress. The gentle immersion of the Museum in the Place, in the Park, must be both metaphorical and literal: the new Museum is not composed of a dominant, imposing mass but of separate, smaller units, the main body of which sinks slightly inside in the Park so that its apparent height is smaller, its proportions elongated, its surfaces planted and receptive: a Museum - Park.
